Superintendent Lynnette Blackburn to Retire After 31 Years of Service
Brewster, WA - After more than three decades of dedicated service in education, Brewster School District Superintendent Lynnette Blackburn announced her retirement, effective July 2026.
Mrs. Blackburn's career in education spans 30 years within the Brewster School District, and one year in Pateros, marked by a steady progression of roles and a deep commitment to students, staff, and the broader community. Her career in education began in 1985 in nearby Pateros, where she worked as a bus driver supporting extracurricular and athletic programs. She coached basketball, track and softball for many years. She later served as a paraprofessional in Okanogan while working her way through college.
In 1995, Mrs. Blackburn joined the Brewster School District as an ESL teacher, beginning what would become a long and impactful career. Her leadership abilities and dedication to student success soon led her into administrative roles. In 2004, she was appointed Assistant Principal for both the high/middle schools. In addition to her administrative duties, she coordinated summer school programs, oversaw before- and after-school initiatives, and served as the District Assessment Coordinator.
Mrs. Blackburn's career also included a year as a school counselor, in the nearby school district of Pateros. After a brief time in a counseling role, Mrs. Blackburn recognized that her true passion was in school leadership and was welcomed back to Brewster as the elementary principal.
Over the ten years as a principal Mrs. Blackburn mentored more than six counselors and multiple principals across the region while simultaneously serving as an elementary principal. She often reflects on her decade at the elementary level as the most memorable of her career, citing the strong sense of teamwork and the joy of working with young students.
"I really loved the elementary students and enjoyed their developing sense of humor; you never know what a kid will say, this was a fun time in my career." Blackburn shared. "That time, along with my experiences at the high school where I built lifelong friendships, has meant everything to me."
"I often tell colleagues, jokingly, that I've experienced nearly every role in a school-from custodial work to secretarial tasks-although I somehow managed to avoid becoming a cook."
As district needs evolved, Mrs. Blackburn stepped into additional leadership roles. Following budget reductions and the retirement of key personnel, she transitioned to serve as the Federal Programs and Special Education Director. After two years in that role, she was selected to lead the district as Superintendent, a position she has held for the past four years.
Serving as superintendent brought a new level of challenge and growth. During this time, Mrs. Blackburn gained a deeper understanding of both herself and others, further strengthening her leadership and perspective. She reflects on these years as an important part of her journey and is grateful for the opportunity to serve the district in that capacity.
Beyond her professional contributions, Mrs. Blackburn and her husband, who moved to Pateros in 1984, have been deeply rooted in both Brewster and Pateros. Together, they raised their three children Danni, Brody and Tony, in the Brewster area and have been actively involved in local athletics and the county fair for the past 42 years, further strengthening their connection to the community they have long called home.
Reflecting on her career, Mrs. Blackburn expressed deep gratitude for the people who shaped her journey. "I would not have traded my time with Brewster School District for anything," she said. "The students, their families, and our staff have been incredibly supportive and have made these 31 years a truly successful and meaningful career."
As she prepares for retirement, Mrs. Blackburn's legacy will remain rooted in her unwavering dedication to students, her commitment to educational excellence, and the relationships she built along the way.
